Commission - Smocked Pullover

I am proud to say that I have finished knitting my first ever Pullover! I was commissioned to knit this pullover as a birthday present. The pattern comes from Vogue's Knitting magazines. I was really nervous about this project as 1) it was my first commissioned piece, 2) it wasn't my pattern, and 3) it was a pullover. However, after I took some time to really study the pattern and learn to understand the instructions I felt more comfortable about tackling this pattern.

The yarn used in this pattern is Classic Elite Yarns: Vista, in dye lot #6016 (Alabaster). It is a alpaca and wool blend, and after blocking it is so soft and warm to the touch. Such easy and good quality wool to work with, I'll be sure to use it again!

The pullover is made of four main pieces, front, back and the two sleeves. Knitting the front and back parts each took two days to do and the sleeves could be easily finished in less than a day.

I had to learn how to seam sides (neatly!) and how to smock for this commission as well. So many new techniques learnt in just one project... A word of warning to those who are learning to smock: when having to undo a smocking, please be wary of where your scissors go. I had to learn this the hard way when I accidentally cut the yarn in back piece and had to redo the entire piece. Not fun.

While I have a ways to go before I would call myself a "professional" knitter (I took the time to measure gauge though!), I am really proud of the progress I've made to this point. I was really impressed at the speed at which I was able to complete this, despite having to essentially knit another big piece and having to wait on the extra yarn to ship: two weeks!

And here is my rendition of this pullover!

Even though this was a commissioned piece, I still really liked it myself! Maybe I'll knit one for myself one day?
